the "B" in BK Doll Show
They say Los Angeles is the land of Plastic Princesses, but this summer, Brooklyn is going to welcome some of her own. This coming June 12th and 13th, the Brooklyn Lyceum, a landmarked former bathhouse that has been a fixture on Fourth Avenue for one hundred years (opened in 1910) is hosting the B in BK fashion and collectible doll show.
The
show will be the first of its kind in the borough and will feature not
only a labyrinth of vendors selling vintage and modern 11-12 1/2 inch
fashion dolls, but also Brooklyn's most creative customers and doll
designers providing a host of exciting options for both the newly
minted enthusiast and the seasoned collector.
The show will
also play host to the 25th birthday party for Hasbro's original Pop
goddess Jem, and a photo exhibition of her cousin, Disco Queen, Darci,
presented by photographer James Gibbs.
Why fashion dolls? Event coordinator and lifelong Doll lover says:
"For
generations, little girls have looked to fashion dolls to paint a
fantasy picture of grown up life. Once apon a time we all wanted to
have the dream house, the corvette and the closets of clothes, and even
though most of us have grown up to find real life infinitley more
satisfying, who doesn't still entertain the daydream of being an
astronaut, a veterinarian or even a pink-clad President of the United
States. Fashion dolls allowed us to beleive that any dream was
acheivable, even before feminism, they allowed us to believe that being
a woman was no obstacle to anything you wanted to acheive. This show is
not just a celebration of toys, it is a celebration of dreams. Of
fashion, fun, grandeur and glamour, and of the pure joy of possibility."
In
addition to all of the fabulous displays, there will be the first-ever
Brooklyn Diminutive Design contest, where wannabe mini-fashion moguls
can parade their tiny triumphs down the worlds smallest runway.
*We
will be inviting design students from all over New York to compete in a
sketch contest, where the winning design not only gets a show at the
Lyceum, but will be the official collectible dress of the B in Bk 2011
For
the customizing enthusiast we will have folks on hand all weekend
selling fabrics, trim, fimo, and acrylic paints of all colors to help
you create a one of a kind Brooklyn-born beauty. We will also have
workshops throughout the weekend where attendees can learn fun
techniques such as facial sculpting, clothing design and the delicate
art of the boil-curl.
For the hard-core collector we will have
tons of vintage vendors, selling not only dolls but the all important
impossible to find misscelaneous pieces that every hobbyist needs to
make his or her collection complete. Is your 1964 bubble cut missing
her bathing suit? Your Solo in the Spotlight missing a shoe? There's a
great chance you can find it here.
Finally, for the littlest
doll lovers, there will be activities of all kinds, from paper doll
making to the first ever Brooklyn Doll Swap, where lightly loved ladies
and gently worn doll clothes can find a home in eager new hands.
We
hope to make this a grand event, as well as fun for all who attend. We
beleive we will have something for everyone, even skeptics and even
BOYS. We hope that Grandmas can find their first Francie for their
granddaughters, and that the fantasies of people of all ages can be
realized for one weekend here in the Brooklyn Lyceum.
So come help us paint Park Slope Pink!
